Hanging out at Black Milk HQ today with Henryk and I am so amazed at how much Black Milk

has grown. I remember only 2 years ago when I first rocked up at James's house tights and fabric were taking over the whole place, James would be there methodically and perfectly sewing every single stitch. He has always been so particular about selling the best quality product, and it is paying off. James and his gorgeous family deserve all the reward that comes their way.

Great to see a local designer killing it, great work!

I constantly hear women say how hopeless they think they are at doing makeup

but if I ask them what they use to do it, they say "Cotton buds and fingertips".

Well be prepared, I am going to say something that may shock you....

I can't do an incredibly difficult and intricate contoured smokey eye and double winged eyeliner
with cotton buds or fingers either!!!

I know right!? Fire me.

So here is a list of a few of my MUST have brushes.

1. MAC - 217

If you were only going to buy one brush to do your eye makeup with then this is the brush for you. You can literally drop this brush accidentally on your face somewhere and it will be blended perfectly. Great for contouring, smokey eyes, highlighting underneath the brow bone, and if your lucky it might even make you dinner.

2. The Essential Retractable Kabuki Brush by Mish Mash Makeup

So Mish Mash Makeup's very affordable new Kabuki brush is a bit of an over-achiever to say the least, I mean where do I start? The retractable feature ensures it is both hygienic and mess free- perfect for the hand bag. It can be used with the sleeve fully retracted for a beautifully blended soft finish or you can push it up to compact the bristles for a heavier application. But wait theres more! Its bristles are not only incredibly soft but being synthetic means its 100% Vegan and cruelty free (winning!!).

3. Angled eyeliner brush

Now the secret with the angled brush is that you don't need to spend a fortune on one.

Whether you spend $4 or $40 they are going to last around the same length of time.

I usually just go to the craft store and stock up on a few of cheapies. You can also grab some great lip brushes at the same time..

What is it about androgyny that so intrigues? It’s been a fascination in the fashion world for some time: girls who look like boys, boys who could be girls. Henryk Lobaczewski plays to that fascination in his latest shoot, titled simply WOMAN, deliberately casting model Lola van Vorst of Australia’s Next Top Model fame for her high cheekbones and strong features. If, as the two models lock lips in an intimate kiss, you find yourself pleasantly confused about the gender balance, then Lobaczewski’s job is more than done.

In its striking high contrast black and white, WOMAN couldn’t be more perfectly photographed. The models’ dirty skin doesn’t just create a grittiness in the shoot but also cleverly brings out the detail and mid-tones. And regardless of whether full length or close-up, nude or clothed, every image is steeped in a raw and emotive sensuality.

Q&A: Henryk Lobaczewski – Australian Fashion Photographer

Henryk Lobaczewski is an Australian photographer who has an amazing archive of editorial, beauty and advertising work. Featured here is a loud and colorful shoot with model Eliza Humble. She is styled by Daniel George in an overload of accessories, jewelry , colorful prints and one cute puppy. It all comes together superbly, and the eclectic assortment of props really work within the context of the shoot. Eliza’s make-up, by Amelia Axton, is bold and crazy colorful, which really works with her platinum blonde waves styled by Lauren McGowan (Creative Director of Cloud Nine).

Daniel: Tell me about yourself, where are you from and where did all of this begin?

Henryk: It’s funny how fast life can evolve. I started as an art director for Lorna Jane, and they wanted me to shoot their look books. I picked up a camera, they got me some lights and a Mac and off I went. I spent lunch breaks up at a photography store and picked their brains, even after work I’d buy them some beers and ask questions week to week. I fell in love with photography pretty quickly.

I started borrowing the lights a lot, until I used them so much I had to buy them. I started shooting all their campaigns. I shot my first cover for Men’s Health, I built a website, then I decided to focus solely on photography. I resigned and freelanced back to them as a photographer and picked up Triumph lingerie as a client and within a year I had moved to Sydney.

I had no clients in Sydney, nothing, but I set up a studio straight away and a few key friends helped me meet a few clients and business grew rapidly for me. It’s funny how fast life can evolve – but you need so much passion, determination and drive.

Daniel: Have you always been artistic?

Henryk: Well, I was good at graffiti and sketching as a kid. Then I moved to Spain for a year and painted schools, bedrooms and skate parks (all legal and commissioned). Once I got back to Australia I thought, “OK, how can I make real money from this?” So I studied graphic design and became an art director.

Daniel: Were you always passionate about photography?

Henryk: While studying design, I was always told I focused most of my design around images and I didn’t want to use other peoples images (it felt like cheating), so I’d change them in photoshop or shoot them myself. My dad had a whole photography kit, as did my mum, but it was only a hobby for them. I think it was an under-explored passion which I never thought I could make money from. While studying design I did buy a better camera and started to learn some of the technical aspects, but only landscapes with natural light.

Daniel: Is photography something you went to school for?

Henryk: I have never studied it.

Daniel: What inspires you?

Henryk: Right now, it’s finding that fine-line, the edge of amazing that every photo can have, if it’s shaped and altered just right. It’s the hardest thing for any photographer, I think, as getting a beautiful shot is easy in fashion, but deciding to change it, to push it a touch more is the real secret. It all comes down to aesthetics, it really does- and aesthetics grow and mature in a photographer. What I now realize is you want to keep retouching to a minimum, as the beauty should be in the capture. The beauty is in the imperfections.

Daniel: What has been the most rewarding achievement as a photographer?

Henryk: That feeling after a shoot or after a retouching session, when you just know you killed it and made something amazing. I think I live for that feeling.

Daniel: Do you think we’ll be seeing online editorials, instead of print within the next 5 years

Henryk: It’s crazy. It’s all so quickly become a true reality. I love print, I love the smell of a new magazine (especially VELVET magazine.. it smells amazing!) but yes, I think it’s bound to happen. Magazines on iPad’s are already amazing. Richard Branson backed a new one recently.

Daniel: In todays world, when print magazines are hardly selling, how do you think the online world can shape the photography industry?

Henryk: It would be a shame to see print go. There is something special about opening a magazine and seeing your images in print, but the web makes it much more accessible.

Daniel: Images are quite easy to steal online. How do you protect yours?

Henryk: I hate seeing images with water marks on them- it renders an image an ad, not a piece of beauty as it should be. I have a flash based website that you can’t drag images off, but if people use them for inspiration or desktop images, I’m blessed.

Daniel: Who or what do you think is iconic?

Henryk: Alexander McQueen and his last collection before he took his life. It was out of this world, and it inspired so many designers. So many of the most brilliantly talented people have a touch of crazy within them, they are just all so passionate.

“I was so inspired by the gritty elements of Asia, and I love seeing the culture clash of that with the western world,” says Henryk Lobaczewsk after he has just shot his first story for Ben Trovato, Downtown. Models Millicent and Joella from Viviens, and Stephanie from The Agency Models stars in this surreal and visually intriguing story, realizing Henryk’s attempt to visualize the clash between the Asian- and western culture: “- With Downtown I tried to leave all the scenes I was shooting untouched and rich in detail, while telling a story with a certain awkward undertone. I wanted to put these women in contrasting set-ups and let both sides shine on their own.“

This photoshoot was one I did quite a while ago for Inika Mineral Makeup.

Unlike some “natural” brands, Inika products are guaranteed to be completely free from harsh petrochemicals, fillers, talc, bismuth oxychloride, GM ingredients, parabens, preservatives, mineral oils, phthalates and fragrances. All products are also non-comedogenic, which means they won’t clog the pores, and are so gentle that women who have suffered allergies and sensitivities to cosmetics for years have been able to wear Inika without any reaction.

Ever since discovering Inika I cannot get enough of their beautiful mineral foundation (the coverage is so good) along with the primer (which smells and feels AMAZING) and their highly pigmented eyeshadows.

I must add, I was VERY skeptical on the whole Mineral Makeup idea, I had tried a few different brands and couldn't get the consistency and coverage I desired (they just looked all powdery and wore off in about 30 minutes), but Inika's powder foundation is great, it really works with the natural oils in your skin to create a flawless, dewey finish- not powdery at all!

ohhh I am in love with this shoot! It is super cute!! The model is just so smiley, happy and gorgeous!

Thom Kerr has done an amazing job as usual. It features some of the fantastic collection by Jamie Lee Major. I only recently discovered her designs.. and Oh My God.. freeeking awesome.

Love the makeup and hair (can someone tell me who did it?) I think this shoot is being used as the advertising for Perth Fashion Festival.

Very exciting.

I did a photoshoot a little while ago, and I just received the photos.

One of the great things I love about being a Makeup Artist is

finally receiving the pictures of a shoot I have worked on, seeing which shots the photographer has chosen, what retouching has been done and how the whole thing has creatively come together.. its like Christmas!

So I get Christmas pressie's alot!

Hey guys! This is a competition that I entered at the start of the year. I was picked as one of the top four in Australia to compete in the Cleo Make Me a Makeup Artist Competition.

It was such an awesome experience, I had such a blast and I was fortunate enough to meet some amazing makeup artists in the process.

Henryk made this for me, when he showed me I was on the floor in stitches of laughter, it reminds me of one of those corny actors head shots...

It just needs that blurred look around the edges to give it that glamour shot feel.

So I have been very busy the past week doing lots of photoshoots and meeting lots of seriously talented artists in the process.
I cant wait to show you all the piccys!

So ANYWAY, I was fortunate enough to be apart of the amazing Miss Unkon show at RAFW this year. Becca Gilmartin was the superb makeup director who came up with the looks and who also was crazy enough to wake up at about 2am to start the bodypainting, well by wake up I mean.. not actually sleep at all the night before. She is a true star.

Courtney's designs were absolutely gorgeous! She did such an amazing job, I was so ridiculously impressed and excited to be apart of such a wonderful show.

I think if I had to choose only one Australian photographer that I would absolutely LOVE to work with it would have to be Georges Antoni.

I was just having a look through his new website and no matter how many times I see some of his shots I still get blown away with how amazing his work is.

I love how he doesn't follow the trend of making models look conventionally pretty. They always look unearthly, vacant almost.. which creates such a fascinating mood. Some of the scenes he creates are so wonderfully over the top. So much talent!
